Local employment is enjoying a boost from employer of choice and award-winning Motherwell-based articulated hauler manufacturer Volvo CE Haulers. The company is currently looking to expand its team and hire around 100 new employees which – with benefits including hybrid and four-day working weeks – is welcome news to the local community.

The North Lanarkshire company designs and builds Rokbak articulated haulers – heavy-duty dump trucks used to transport loads in a variety of industries from construction to quarries.

The Motherwell site has been manufacturing off-road trucks since 1950, but the company has had several name changes in that time – most recently to Terex Trucks in 2014 when it became part of the Volvo Group, and then to Rokbak in September 2021.

Now, thanks to increased global demand for its products, the local company is looking to strengthen its team with a variety of industrial and office-based positions available including: Assemblers, Painters, Welders, Platers, CNC Machinists, Final Assemblers, Maintenance Fitter, Maintenance Electrician, Technical Writer, HSE Advisor, Manufacturing Engineer, Quality Engineer and Buyer. Both permanent and temporary positions are available.

A skilled and passionate team is committed to delivering industry-leading performance, power and reliability.

Why Rokbak?

“After becoming part of the Volvo Group, we’ve benefitted from tens of millions of pounds of investment in our products, facilities and people,” explains Paul Douglas, Motherwell native and Rokbak’s Managing Director.

“It was clear we needed to rebrand to highlight the huge improvements that we’ve made to our products – the RA30 and RA40 – as well as the entire business.

“The new Rokbak brand is a big success, and that’s thanks to all our employees. We are seeing huge demand for our products, so we are now back recruiting a variety of jobs from entry-level to experienced positions across the business.

“This is great news for our company but also for the local community. It has been a tough few years for everyone with Covid and the current UK economic crisis, so it means a lot that we have been able to hire, and continue to hire, to help hardworking and enthusiastic people join our team.”

Rokbak haulers are exported to locations all over the world right out of the Motherwell factory.

Employer of choice

Volvo CE Haulers is a local employer of choice and team members enjoy great benefits such as hybrid and four-day working weeks, which were implemented following employee feedback.

“At Rokbak we really value our employees and things like our four-day working week and hybrid working enhance peoples work-life balance and bring positive results for health and wellbeing,” says Paul. “We have a significant focus on health and safety, employee wellbeing and mental health, with 18 trained on-site mental health first aiders providing regular ‘health MOTs’ for employees. We have also partnered with Headtorch – experts in workplace mental health.”

Other highlights that make Volvo CE Haulers a local employer of choice include generous maternity and paternity leave, enhanced pension and life insurance policies, cycle-to-work and electric vehicle schemes, sponsored training courses, upskilling, secondments, generous sick pay, annual salary reviews and high-street partnerships for collective discounts.

The company also offers a variety of apprenticeship programmes, for both prospective and current employees, allowing them to achieve SVQs, HNCs, and HNDs while learning their trade and earning money, as well as degree level qualifications with Rokbak’s graduate apprenticeship scheme. Applications for this year’s apprentice program are now open. Last year Rokbak took on eight apprentices.

Volvo CE Haulers apprentices Robbie Anderson, Pierce Mulholland, Bradley Marshall, Dylan McGuire and Reece Dingwall at the Motherwell site.

“We have over 70 years of heritage in Motherwell and all the skills, knowledge and experience that comes with that,” concludes Paul. “Many of our highly-skilled team have worked with us for decades – like their parents and even grandparents before them. This is a great company to work for, we are proud to be a local employer of choice and a human-centric company.”
